Post-operative instructions following periodontal surgery

Periodontal Surgery is a highly sophisticated and delicate procedure, carried out in a very limited and confined field of action, and eminently challenging. Therefore, we kindly ask you to adhere to the following instructions for you to have a more comfortable post-operative experience and faster healing.

1. Take the prescribed medication to minimize post-operative discomfort (Paracetamol, Ibuprofen), during the first 36 hours.
2. After 36 hours, it is normal for you to have slight discomfort that will last 3 or 4 days, especially when you come into contact with food or a toothbrush.
3. You will find your saliva slightly pink and tasting of blood during the first 24 hours. If any suture continues to bleed, apply continuous pressure without moving with a piece of gauze or cotton moistened with hydrogen peroxide for 5 minutes.
4. In case surgical cement has been used, remember that it should remain during 24 hours. If not, please come back to the clinic to re-apply it.
5. Do not eat nor drink anything hot during the first 24 hours.
6. Drink one or two liters more than what you would normally drink.
7. Avoid eating hard foods during the first 4 days. Eat only soft or semisoft foods such as eggs, Italian pasta, fish, bread crumbs, purées, etc.
8. Do not brush your teeth during the first 24 hours after the procedure. After 24 hours, use the toothbrush prescribed by us.
9. Rinse your mouth out with the mouthwash prescribed by us.
10. Apply a bag of ice externally for half an hour, alternating between 5 minutes of application and 5 minutes of rest.
11. We recommend not smoking during the first 48 hours, as it may slow down healing.
12. It is possible that you may experience a temporary increase in sensitivity to heat and tooth mobility.
13. If you have any questions, call us at 928 59 14 02.

Post-operative Instructions

1. After the procedure, apply pressure with a piece of gauze for approximately 30 min. If bleeding continues, change it and apply pressure for another 30 min.
2. To avoid inflammation, apply ice on the area intermittently during 6 to 8 hours.
3. DO NOT RINSE YOUR MOUTH OUT OR SPIT.
4. Maintain a position in which the head remains higher than the body. Do not exert yourself or engage in risky activities in the 48 hours following the procedure.
5. Eat a soft diet and try to ingest liquid foods at room temperature. Do not eat small grains or foods with small seeds such as: poppy seeds, rice, kiwi, orange juice, etc. which may get lodged in the area.
6. It is normal to experience slight discomfort, difficulty in opening the mouth, and perhaps even run a temperature.
7. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Do not stop taking medication unless your doctor tells you to do so. Under no circumstances should you take aspirin.
8. You should know that smoking may cause a Dry socket, which is a complication that comes with a throbbing pain and a foul odor. This is why we advise you to stop smoking for as long as possible, as smoking also hinders proper osseointegration of the implants.
9. In the case of sinus lifts, you should not travel by plane during approximately twenty days. Remember that you should not blow your nose, and in case of sneezing, you should do so with your mouth open. Do not lift or carry objects or perform any physical activity for a month.

Post-Whitening Care Instructions

We ask the patient to apply the following measures over the next 15 days after whitening:
1. Avoid foods containing natural or chemical dyes.
2. Do not drink beverages such as: coffee, tea, soft drinks, red wine, chocolate, etc.
3. Avoid beverages or foods that are too hot or cold. If necessary, a desensitizing treatment will be recommended.
4. Avoid smoking.
5. Do not use colored toothpaste or mouthwash, as these contain artificial extracts and dyes.
6. Maintain proper and thorough oral hygiene, using reinforcing treatment, whitening toothpaste, in case of specific instructions.

Self-care for patients with Cranio-Mandibular Dysfunction

These measures are an essential part of treatment.

a) Resting the muscles and joints will enable healing.
1. A soft diet will allow the joint and muscles to recover faster and heal.
2. Do not chew gum as this irritates the joint and tires the muscles.
3. Relax your facial muscles.
4. Do not clench your teeth as this irritates the joint and muscles.
5. Yawning with your mouth closed protects the joint (tongue on the palate).
6. Avoid opening the mouth too wide to eat: do not bite into apples or huge sandwiches. Slice them into smaller pieces and put the pieces into your mouth.
b) Make sure to always maintain good posture.
7. Be careful when sitting (to work, study, or watch television): your back should touch the back rest of the chair. Avoid forward positions of the head.
8. Sleep face up or on your side, with a good pillow that provides proper support to the neck and shoulders. Do not sleep face down.
9. Perform the exercises recommended by your doctor to exercise the facial muscles, opening and closing against the fingers.
10. Engaging in sports helps to maintain good overall muscle tone.
11. Do not hold the phone with your chin.
12. Do not bite your fingernails.
13. Do not bite pencils nor pens.
14. Avoid biting your cheeks and lips, and also avoid tongue thrust habits.
c) Avoid stress.
15. Tea, coffee, Coca-Cola, and chocolate.
d) Home remedies.
16. Moist heat for 20 minutes promotes healing and relaxation of the muscles.
17. In case of severe pain that does not go away with moist heat, moist heat should be interspersed with ice (alternate ice and heat, 5 seconds of heat, 5 seconds of ice, repeat 5 times for pain relief).
e) Splint.
18. Use and Maintenance: Rinse after each use with water (avoid hot water) and leave face down in its box or soak in mouthwash or denture cleaner.
f) Medication.
19. Anti-inflammatory medicine, if you do not have any contraindications, for pain relief during the acute phase.
20. Anti-inflammatory creams and sprays, carefully applied on the painful area with a light massage, relieve pain and relax muscles.
