Oral Health and Pregnancy: Protect Your Baby's and Your Smile

Why is oral health so important in pregnancy?

Pregnancy brings with it numerous hormonal changes that can affect the health of your mouth. At Dentsana Clinic, aware of the importance of this stage, we have joined the "Oral Health and Pregnancy" initiative of the General Council of Dentists to promote prevention and oral care among mothers-to-be.

During pregnancy, gums tend to become inflamed more easily, and tooth sensitivity may increase. In addition, there is an increased risk of developing periodontal diseases which, if not treated in time, could have negative consequences not only for the mother, but also for the baby, including premature birth or low birth weight.

Main oral problems during pregnancy

  • Gestational gingivitis: Inflammation of the gums affects many pregnant women due to increased hormone levels. Symptoms include red, swollen gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing.
  • Dental caries: Changes in eating habits, increased consumption of sugars and acids, and possible nausea may increase the risk of tooth decay.
  • Dental erosion: Frequent vomiting can damage tooth enamel, weakening teeth and making them more prone to decay and sensitivity.
  • Granuloma of pregnancy: A small benign tumour that may appear on the gums due to irritation or trauma, but usually disappears after delivery.

Tips for good oral health during pregnancy

  1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Use a soft-bristled brush to avoid damaging sensitive gums.
  2. Flossing daily to remove plaque between teeth and prevent gum inflammation.
  3. Visit to the dentist during the second trimester for a professional check-up and cleaning. This is the safest stage for dental treatment.
  4. Maintain a balanced dietrich in fruits, vegetables, dairy products and foods rich in calcium and vitamin D.
  5. Avoid tobacco and alcoholwhich increase the risk of oral and gestational complications.
  6. Rinse your mouth with water or recommended solutions after vomiting to protect tooth enamel.
  7. Consult your dentist any symptoms of bleeding, pain or inflammation of the gums.

Is it safe to go to the dentist during pregnancy?

Yes, it is not only safe, but also recommended. At Dentsana Clinic, we adapt our treatments to the needs of each stage of pregnancy, always prioritising the safety of mother and baby.

During the second trimester, routine dental treatments such as cleanings, fillings and extractions are safe and, in some cases, necessary to avoid infections that could affect the pregnancy. In emergency situations, treatments can be performed at any time during pregnancy with appropriate precautions.

It is important to always inform your dentist about your pregnancy and any medications you are taking.

Impact of maternal oral health on the baby

Recent studies show that periodontal disease in the mother can increase the risk of complications such as premature birth, low birth weight and pre-eclampsia. Therefore, a healthy mouth contributes directly to a healthier pregnancy and the wellbeing of the baby.

Prevention, oral hygiene education and dental follow-up during pregnancy are essential to reduce these risks.
