Post-operative care after tooth extraction

At Dentsana Clinic, we care about your wellbeing and want to ensure that your recovery after a tooth extraction is as quick and comfortable as possible. Following the right instructions is crucial to avoid complications and promote optimal healing. Below, we offer you a detailed guide on the postoperative care you should follow.

1. Bleeding control

After the extraction, it is normal to experience slight bleeding. To control it:

  • Gently bite down on a gauze placed over the extraction site for 30-45 minutes.
  • If bleeding persists, change the gauze and repeat the process.
  • Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting, as this may dislodge the clot and prolong bleeding.

2. Pain management

Pain is a normal response after a tooth extraction. To minimise it:

  • Take painkillers that your dentist has prescribed, following the instructions.
  • Applies cold compresses on the cheek near the extraction area for the first 24 hours. This will help reduce swelling and pain.

3. Oral hygiene

Maintaining good hygiene is essential to prevent infection:

  • Avoid brushing the extraction area for the first 24 hours.
  • After 24 hours, you can gently rinse off with a salt water solution (mix one teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) several times a day, especially after meals.
  • Brush your teeth normally, but be careful not to affect the extraction area.

4. Diet and habits

Eating right can help your recovery:

  • During the first 24 hours, it consumes soft and cold food such as yoghurt, purees and ice cream.
  • Avoid hard, hot and spicy foods that may irritate the extraction site.
  • Don't use straws (straws) for drinking, as suction can dislodge the clot and cause dry socket.

5. Rest and activities

Giving your body time to recover is essential:

  • Get adequate rest and avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 48 hours.
  • Keep your head elevated when sleeping, using extra pillows, to reduce swelling.

6. Warning signs

It is important to watch for any signs of complications:

  • Severe pain which is not relieved by painkillers.
  • Heavy bleeding which is not controlled by gauze pressure.
  • Severe swelling or that increases after 2-3 days.
  • Fever or signs of infection, such as pus in the area of the extraction.

If you experience any of these symptoms, contact Dentsana Clinic immediately to receive care.
